A radiator that is warm in some places and stone cold in others is telling you something, and where the cold patch sits usually reveals the cause. Cold at the top and cold at the bottom mean two very different things, with two different fixes. If a radiator is warm at the bottom but cold across the top, air has collected inside. Air rises to the highest point of the radiator and stops the hot water reaching that area, so the top stays cool while the bottom heats normally.
This is the most common radiator complaint and, happily, the easiest to fix. Bleeding the radiator lets the trapped air out so hot water can fill it fully again. If your radiators need bleeding often, though, that can hint at a bigger issue drawing air into the system, which is worth mentioning to an engineer.
A radiator that is warm at the top but cold along the bottom, or has cold patches low down and in the middle, is a classic sign of sludge. Over time, rust and debris inside the system form a black, muddy sediment called magnetite that sinks and settles in the bottom of radiators, blocking the flow so that part never warms up.
Bleeding will not fix this, because the problem is not air. The sludge has to be cleaned out of the system, and the more radiators affected, the more built up it usually is.

Afterwards, check the boiler pressure gauge, as bleeding lowers it, and top up to about 1.2 to 1.5 bar if needed.
Sludge needs the system cleaning rather than a quick DIY fix. An engineer can carry out a power flush or chemical clean to clear the debris, and often fit a magnetic filter that catches metal particles before they settle again, plus an inhibitor to slow future corrosion.
They may also balance the radiators so hot water is shared evenly, since a system that heats some rooms far faster than others can leave cooler radiators sluggish. Together these restore even, efficient heating.
Bleeding is fine to do yourself. Call a professional if radiators stay cold after bleeding, if several have cold bottoms suggesting sludge, if you keep having to bleed the same radiator, or if the boiler is also banging or kettling, which points to debris in the system.
